In a recent interview we conducted with 25 Nigerians, every participant described at least one real-world problem caused by poor addressing.
20 said delivery riders had arrived at the wrong location. 19 pointed to duplicate street names as a recurring problem. 18 had experienced being directed to a wall, locked gate, or completely wrong area.
The result is a familiar situation that boils down to one fact: a street can exist physically without having a simple, consistent digital identity that everyone can use to identify it.
That is where the problem begins.
1. Nigerian Streets Don't Always Fit Traditional Addressing Systems
Traditional addressing systems are designed to make places easier to find using a combination of details such as:
House Number → Street Name → City → Postal Code
But many Nigerian locations are not identified that way in practice. You may encounter:
- Streets with similar or identical names
- Roads that are known locally but have no formal name
- Inconsistent house or plot numbering
- Neighbourhoods where landmarks are more useful than official addresses
- Roads that have developed organically over time
A person who lives in an area may know exactly what someone means when they say:
The street after the filling station.
But someone unfamiliar with the area has no reliable way to convert that description into a simple digital reference. This is why two people can be talking about the same place and still end up in completely different locations.
The problem is not necessarily that a map cannot see the road. The problem is that the road may not have a clear, consistent identity that everyone can use.
2. Google Maps Can Show a Road Without Solving the Identification Problem
A map pin can show you a point on a map, but finding a place is often about more than seeing a point. You still need to know: which street is this?
You can share a dropped pin, send an address, or type: “Enter through the second gate after the big tree, pass the mechanic, then take the small road on your right.”
This is why many Nigerians still rely on a combination of:

- Screenshots
- Long WhatsApp messages
- Trial and error
The problem becomes even more obvious when multiple streets have similar names, or when a street is difficult to distinguish from the roads around it.
A delivery rider may know the general area but still struggle to identify the exact street. A visitor may know the neighbourhood but have no simple way to confirm that they are entering the correct road. The map may show the roads. But people still need a simple way to say “this is the street you're searching for.”
3. A Road Can Exist on Google Maps and Still Be Difficult to Navigate
There is another reason people sometimes feel that Google Maps doesn't work in Nigeria: the route shown digitally does not always match the route that works in real life.
A road may be blocked by construction, affected by flooding, inaccessible because of a neighbourhood gate, too narrow for certain vehicles, temporarily closed, or technically connected but practically unusable.
From above, two roads may appear to connect perfectly. On the ground, that connection may end at a locked gate.
A road that was accessible yesterday may be blocked today. A route that looks straightforward on a map may become difficult because of flooding, construction, market activity, or changing access rules.
This creates a gap between what the map says exists and what a driver can actually use. That gap is one of the challenges of navigating rapidly changing cities.
The digital map represents the information available to it, while the person on the ground experiences what is actually happening at that moment. Those two things do not always match.
4. Why Google Maps Can Send You to the Wrong Street in Nigeria
